Day 53: Sat 15 Jul - Lyon

21-34 degC, sunny with a very strong southerly wind (22-78 km/h!)
Walk: 12km; total: 386km

We only made it down to breakfast about 7:30am, after a little sleep-in following our long day yesterday. As the Confluence Museum did not open until 10:30am, this was not an issue. We set off about 9:45am and had a stroll through the Confluence shopping centre before entering the museum at 10:30am. Greg opted to remain outside as he had been inside in 2019.

Opened in 2014, it is nestled between the Rhône and Saône rivers, and the earth and the sky. It is a multi-faceted stainless steel structure that catches the changing colours of the sky. The museum is a metaphor for constantly evolving knowledge, which it aims to share with all. There are two distinct areas in the museum, the ‘Crystal’ is the monumental hall welcoming the city, and the ‘Cloud’ that is home to the permanent and temporary exhibitions.

One of the temporary exhibitions on offer is a collection of black and white photos from Marc Riboud (1923-2016), mainly from Northern Africa, and the Middle East. Apparently Marc didn’t want to be known as a photographer, rather a traveler with a keen eye for a picture. Whilst there were some good pictures, Wendy was not that impressed. The other temporary exhibits were: Secrets from the Earth (all the different minerals, etc), We, the Rivers (was interesting), and Africa - a thousand lives of Objects (a collection of artifacts, mainly from Northern Africa).

The permanent exhibits are: Origins - Stories of the World, Species - the Web of Life (Wendy’s favourite), Societies - Human Nature, Eternities - Visions of the Beyond, and Émile Guimet gallery (basically a collection of stuff from a number of sources). After one and a half hours, Wendy had had enough so met up with Greg, wandered back to the Confluence shopping centre for a Maccas lunch.

Back to the hotel for a rest before heading out again to capture dinner. Greg continued to recce the route to another train station that we leave from on Monday for Geneva. He also went to a Westfield Shopping Centre and thought he’d time traveled back home. He could have been in Westfield Indooroopilly or Chermside. The whole place was buzzing so the French enjoy our style of shopping centres.
