Walk: 9km; total: 276km
As we were providing our own breakfast today, there was no rush to hop out of bed and get to the breakfast room. The other two reasons for not leaping out of bed were that is was drizzling with more likely to come and the tourist info centre did not open until 9am. Another load of washing was done and breakfast was had. We arrived at the info centre at 9:05am and with trusty tourist map in hand, off we went. There was no explanation of any of the sights, so we weren’t sure what to see and what to bypass. We photographed a few sights, however the light was was horrible. By this stage, the rain had gone and replaced with a very sneaky breeze. We found a boulangerie and purchased mornos and lunch and went back to our apartment.
We ventured out again after about an hour, when the sky had brightened a bit and promised to brighten even more. Greg had done a bit of research during the break to find the sights we should definitely see, so we went out with more purpose this time. We also revisited previous ones to get better pictures.
Back home for lunch and a rest, then Greg went to get his bike. However it turned out to be a fruitless exercise. As soon as he rode it he knew that the bike hadn’t been fixed and it still had the old chain. The repairman looked so confident that he’d fixed it. Greg was immediately suspicious when he said no charge. We will try again at our next stop. If we fail there, we’ll try in Dijon as we are catching the train to there. Wendy went out for a short walk to the canal bridge as the sun had decided to come out again. Alas, the photos were not much better.
The rest of the afternoon was spent doing nothing much.
Dinner was pizza, and although nothing like the Australian pizzas, they were nice and filled the gap.
Church of Notre Dame de la Providence, built from 1869 in a Romanesque-Byzantine style. The tympanums of the facade were carved from 1976-78, so are very new. A tympanum in architecture is a semicircular or triangular decorative wall surface over an entrance door or window.
Some of the nicest lead lighting we’ve ever seen
One of the fresh food stalls at the town market. We bought half a kilo of cherries.
Digoin Town Hall
Garden behind the Town Hall
Postal Centre building
A house that Greg likes
A little alleyway
Not sure what this guy is doing, but he has a big drop
Public school for boys of the Bartoli Group (can’t find any info on who they are)
Digoin canal bridge
Promenade along the Loire at Digoin
The opposite end of the canal bridge
